Chapter Twenty-Six

“Exiting the interstellar jump,” Byrd said from the navigation controls on Phoenix’s small bridge. The image on the bridgescreen snapping into focus as the main engines took over.

Isin pulled up the comm on the control panel for the captain’s chair and checked for incoming messages. Sure enough, one popped up from Sweep. He quickly read the transcription.

Orlov and Stevens will be on the bridge with Rathburn this morning installing the new navigation console. I’m working to hack into Rathburn’s implant. Ping me before you enter the system.

Patel had informed them about Rathburn’s implant and how it gave him override control of all the major systems on his ship. Breaking his connection to the ship was her first task, before disabling the ship’s defense systems.

“Something interesting?” Byrd asked.

Isin glanced over at the pilot. He hadn’t told Byrd or the crew about Sweep. Maybe he was being superstitious, but until he laid eyes on his friend, he was holding his tongue. In addition to Kenji, Itorye, and Patel, only Shash and Avril knew. Shash would be his second on this mission—he couldn’t afford to keep her in the dark. Besides, she’d never risk Sweep’s safety. She respected him far too much. And Avril was Sweep’s protégé, which is why Isin had put him in charge of coordinating with Sweep to get Patel safely into position to do her job.

Isin shook his head. “Not important.” He sent a quick reply to Sweep. Arrived. Initiating phase one.

Sweep’s response was almost instantaneous. Ready and waiting.

Isin motioned to the bridgescreen. “Take us in slow.”

As Byrd guided the ship into the system, Isin studied the incoming sensor information. It didn’t take long to locate Rathburn’s ship—right where Sweep had told them it would be.

“They’re in orbit around one of the gas giant’s moons,” Kenji confirmed from the tactical console. In fact, it was the very moon Isin had been hoping to hide behind when he’d run from Kerr’s ship.

“Can you see Vengeance?”

Kenji brought up the visual feed, but the moon’s shadow prevented any direct imaging of Rathburn’s ship. “Switching to infrared.” The outline of Rathburn’s ship popped out of the dark background, the smooth line of its hull broken by a blocky appendage on the starboard side. “She’s docked starboard forward.”

Isin leaned closer, studying the image over Kenji’s shoulder.

Kenji pointed to a smaller protrusion barely visible on the port side. “He’s put Kerr’s ship opposite.”

Dealing with Rathburn would be challenging enough. Having Kerr on the same ship complicated the situation. Not that he could do anything about it. He opened an internal comm channel. “Itorye, we’ve located Cerberus and Vengeance. Are you and Patel ready?”

“All set.”

“Stand by.” Tension settled into his shoulders. He was putting a lot of faith in the plan Patel had devised. Not that he’d had much choice. She knew Rathburn, and the capabilities of his ship. And she had a mother’s determination to keep Alec from falling into Rathburn’s hands. For now, he’d trust in that.

And in Sweep. Knowing he was onboard Vengeance, watching over Natasha, made the situation bearable.
